Children’s Health and Welfare
Accident and Illness
At Mullum we make every effort to avoid accidents and to ensure your children will be well cared for in the event of an accident occurring.
We have a number of staff members who have current Level 2 Safety In the workplace qualification.
Every effort is made to notify parents if a child is ill or in need of further attention.
Anaphylaxis Management Plans
Parents, in consultation with their family doctor, must document a management plan. At the commencement of each year the school will send home a proforma which parents are required to complete so that management information held by the school remains current.
A current epipen is kept at school. All staff have been trained to deal with a reaction.
Asthma Management Plans
Parents, in consultation with their family doctor, must document a management plan. At the commencement of each year the school will send home a proforma which parents are required to complete so that management information held by the school remains current.
Certificate of Immunisation
All students must inform the school of their immunisation status before their first attendance at school. A certificate of immunisation status must be produced for school records. This is obtained from the Health Officer of your local Council.
Children’s Health
Please remember that sick students must be kept home. The sick bay provides for minor upsets at school. The school’s policy is to contact the parents if the illness is protracted or of a serious nature, so that students can be taken home. It is imperative that the school has your daily contact number and/or that of a responsible friend who can be relied upon in an emergency. If this information changes, please notify the school immediately.
If your child’s health status changes (eg, he/she develops allergies, asthma, etc.) please ensure that the Principal is made aware of this change immediately. This will ensure that the necessary knowledge and precautions are drawn to the attention of all staff.
If medication is to be taken at school, written instructions must be handed to the teacher. Prescription medication must come to school in the original pharmacy packaging with the child’s name and dosage label in tact. If your child suffers from asthma, an action plan needs to be completed and an inhaler must accompany him/her in their bag. The school does have an inhaler, which can be applied in an emergency.
The school possesses a well-maintained first aid kit. We also have a number of appropriate kits, which are always taken on excursions.
Head Lice
From time to time head lice may become evident in the school. Please notify the school if your child does become infected. We arrange an inspection twice each year for all children through the City of Maroondah’s Health Services. A returned Permission Form is required
Head Lice procedure:
· Inspect your child’s hair at least weekly.
· Purchase an effective lotion from your pharmacist if your child requires treatment.
· Remove old eggs with a fine comb. A solution of vinegar and water assists with the removal of eggs.
· Wash all personal clothing and bedding.
· Report the infestation to the School.
· Child is to be excluded from school until appropriate treatment has begun.
Health Screenings
This annual screening is carried out by a school-nurse who will:
· carry out a health screening on all Prep grade students.
· carry out screening tests on, and investigate as appropriate, any students referred by teachers or parents because of suspected health problems.

Welfare & Discipline
Mullum is a caring school, not only concerned with catering for cognitive growth and physical skill development, but also providing for the emotional and social needs of its students. The school community shares a strong set of values that pervade all interactions between the school’s stakeholders. Students are explicitly taught the behaviours that support the school’s values.
Students are encouraged to be confident, courteous and friendly and to be responsible for their own actions. School programs and initiatives such as Junior School Council all aim to build these skills. The members of Junior School Council represent all students from Prep-Grade 6.
Resources, external to the school, provide supportive student health services.
