Parliamentary Convention

Over the last few weeks these five students have been preparing for a day in the Legislative Council debating the bill "Should voting be compulsory in Australia?".  Pat presented on behalf of the school in favour of compulsory voting, however, as students listened to the guest speakers and other students there were moments when they could have been swayed by the compelling arguments against compulsory voting.

Welcome to Zeena

We’re so excited to welcome Zeena, Mullum Primary’s therapy dog, to our school! Zeena visits classrooms every Monday and Tuesday morning from 9:00 to 9:45am to support students.

Zeena is a whippet—a gentle, calm, and affectionate breed with a soft, low-shedding coat. She’s been specially trained through K9 Support alongside her handler, Pippa Thompson, a paediatric Allied Health assistant and final-year Occupational Therapy student.

Healesville Sanctuary

This week, our Grade 1 & 2 students visited Healesville Sanctuary as part of their Inquiry unit, Connections Between People and Places. Highlights included a cultural workshop with guide Lachie, learning about Aboriginal symbols, fire-making, and the use of native plants. Students were especially moved by the possum skin cloak, linking beautifully to our Kooramook program. From wildlife encounters to Dreamtime stories, it was a powerful day of connection and discovery.

Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits

What a huge week! We are so proud of all of our students and their performances this week.  After months of rehearsals, it was time to go to Karralyka. The theatre was buzzing with nervous students but it didn't take long before they were on stage doing their singing, dancing, acting roles.  Students were shocked to know that there was going to be more than 600 people coming to watch them on stage

A Magical Start to Fairytales

Our Foundation students were excited to find that Goldilocks had visited their classroom and left behind a broken chair! As part of the Talk 4 Writing Fairytales unit, they investigated the mystery and helped repair it. After reading Jack and the Beanstalk, they planted their own beanstalks. These fun, hands-on activities help build vocabulary and inspire imaginative storytelling.

Exploring Non-Newtonian Fluids

This term, our Grade 3 and 4 students began an exciting Chemistry unit by exploring Non-Newtonian fluids. They learned that these materials can act like both solids and liquids depending on the force applied. To experience this firsthand, they created Oobleck by mixing cornflour and water. The messy, hands-on activity made science fun and engaging!

New Benches in the Yard

Exciting news from the yard! After three years in the making, our new benches are finally here. This is all thanks to our Junior School Councillors and their amazing fundraising support! The idea came straight from students via the “Communication Station,” and now their voices have shaped real change.

Kooramook Celebrates Harmony in Our School

Our cross-age Kooramook program recently celebrated a belated Harmony Week, recognizing and embracing the many cultures within our school community. Students explored the significance of the day, shared stories about their families and traditions, and reflected on different beliefs and celebrations. To showcase our diversity, each student decorated a handprint representing their heritage, creating a vibrant ‘Wall of Hands’ celebrating unity in diversity.

A Tradition of Growth

Each year, we welcome our newest students to Mullum with a special tradition—the planting of a Foundation tree. Presented by our school captains, the tree symbolizes the start of each child's seven-year journey with us. This week, Foundation students eagerly planted their tree, adding fertilizer and water to help it settle in. They will care for it throughout their time at Mullum, growing alongside it until they reach Year 6!

Creatures of Symmetry

Inspired by the school’s production of Ali Baba, students explored the fascinating world of caves and their inhabitants. They studied various insects, appreciating the beauty of symmetry in their intricate features. While reviewing key art room safety protocols, they practiced delicate folding and precise cutting techniques. This led to the creation of stunning butterflies and moths, each showcasing symmetrical patterns.
